LO4: Project Evaluation

Project Evaluation

Introduction
During this unit I was asked to carry some research into television productions which use a single camera. After this I joined a group to plan, prepare and produce a five minute long single camera production. This evaluation will outline the benefits, problems and outcomes of this project. Following this I will also be writing about the feedback we received from our audience and if I were to produce a similar project in the future, how I will go about doing it to produce a fine piece near professional standards.

Planning
Benefits of Planning
My group worked most effectively during the planning process of this single camera, as I delegated certain tasks to individual members of my group; taking the responsibility of being project leader. All the tasks were divided and assigned to members whom then completed each task and we were able to assemble the paperwork for planning together.

The planning process for this project was particularly useful because it enabled us to budget our money properly, as well as film accordingly to actors’ flexibility. The storyboard allowed us to exactly know what we had to film and what shots and angles to record at; making it easier on shoot. Also the treatment and synopsis allowed the actors to clearly understand their roles within the production and act like the description.

Problems During Planning

In the planning process we as a group did not face many problems however there were slight hitches. The problems which occurred during the planning process was that we had school closures hence couldn’t complete the tasks we needed to, for the date set. This meant that we had to make up the missing time quickly as it would reflect upon the poor quality of the production. We managed to make up for the missing time quickly and were back on track. We did this by technological communication outside of school hours.

Outcome

There was a positive outcome of our efficient planning as we had everything planned in time for our production shooting and were able film despite the hours we had missed. We logged all of our meetings, as well as having a constructive storyboard at hand and we also carried out risk assessments to make sure that our actor’s and crew members were safe while out on locations, filming.

Production
Benefits of Production
During the production of this project we as a group faced many difficulties however we still managed to produce a trailer length video which consisted of elements from our original idea. As we had days of breaks between each filming schedule we still managed to create a piece of production which contains elements of near professional standard shots and angles. We used a silhouette effect within the production as well as using various shots from establishing shots, to medium shot and close ups. Also this short video contained bird eye view shots, freeze frames, subtitles and text.

Problems During Production
At first we were doing really well, until members of my group began to slack. I had got to a point where I had edited 45 seconds of the single drama and I had to return to the filming locations to shoot. A few weeks later when I returned to the saved project I realised that an error had occurred and hence I had to restart the editing process again. This took up a lot of my time whereas I could have been using it to shoot other aspects of the drama. After this many other problems arose.

The problems we faced during production were that our actors were not always available when we needed them hence it delayed our production work. Also while we were on shoot as well as in the edit room, I realised that I had a large amount of input in the filming and editing process. This made it difficult for me as I could not complete both tasks together as one required being outdoors and the other indoors.

I had to assort my time accordingly so that I could film and edit both outside of lesson hours. The pressure built up onto me when I realised that my group were unable to film properly without me. I had to take the responsibility of making sure that we were filming correctly, abiding by the rules and regulations for television standards. I was aware of this problem when I had asked my group to use the green screen to film without me whilst I was editing and when they returned with the footage I noticed that the green screen has been misused and the camera setup was poor, therefore we had to scrap the footage.

Also another problem which could have easily been solved was that the main female actress taking Maaria’s role within our production had gone on holiday and therefore as we needed her in the particular scenes we could not film and had to wait for her return. However in this meanwhile I edited the clips we previously had. If we had filmed according to our schedule and original plan, we would have been editing at the point of the actress’s absence hence this problem wouldn’t have occurred, but due to lack of teamwork it took too long to complete even a minutes worth of footage.

Outcome

The outcome for our production work was poor. I had only created a piece of single drama which was 1 minute and 15 seconds long (approximation), whereas the specification required a five minute long single drama production. Although being in a group I was working as an individual to produce, edit and complete this project. I had hardly any support from my group members within the production of this project. The excused I would receive from them quite often would be that they do not know how to work the camera or they do not have free hours to film. This was the consequence of working in a friendship group and the result of me being lenient towards them.

Teamwork
Benefits of Teamwork
The benefits of teamwork were that we were able to carry out some tasks quickly and were able to move ahead with some tasks very fast. Our most effective teamwork was during the planning stages where we understood what needed to be done and work to accomplish each task to a high standard.

Problems With Teamwork
Our group dealt with problems during the production stages regarding teamwork. This is when as a group we had a poor performance and it caused distances and problems within the group. The problems have been outlined above under the production heading.

Outcome
Despite the lack of teamwork during the production stage, I was still able to produce a short piece for the examiners body even though they had asked for a single drama which needed to be 5 minutes long.

Conclusion
Areas for Improvements
Suggestions for improvements for this project overall are that the planning should be completed quickly, taking up minimum time so that the group can spend more time on the production, editing and final touches to the production. There should be a Gantt chart in place to specify the tasks which need to be completed and when by so that there is no slacking and delay. This will help produce a finer piece of production and allow the group to make tweaks of re-shoot some scenes of the script if it is inadequate.

Also I have learnt from this project, not to work within a friendship group and if I do work in a friendship group then do not behave too leniently with the group members. If I were to replicate a similar project to this in the future I would make sure that my group has knowledge and training of how to work with cameras, as well as knowing how to use different angles and equipment such as the green screen.

In conclusion, this project became hard to handle during production however on average it was exciting and innovative. This is because the idea itself was new and original and it was not stereotypical. The whole concept is fresh and ideal to the target audience which we wanted to aim it at. It also caught the attention of our audience which proved that it created a contract with the target audience, within the first minute of the opening of this video. I am quite pleased with my individual effort within this production, however I do believe that this idea has a lot more potential and can easily be developed to meet the requirements of the examining body.

LO2 & LO3: Pre/Post Production Work

Target Audience
The target audience of our single drama are individual’s between ages of thirteen to nineteen, however adults older than this age range are also able to watch, this as this can reflect their lives and may be of their interest. As the target audience is a teenage audience, it is very likely that the consumers are mainly teenagers and not matured adults. Therefore, this programme will be inappropriate for young children as some of the content is not suitable for them.

A teenage audience would want to watch this programme because it contains elements of realism and heaps of drama. Many of the dilemmas within this are evolved around teenage relationships and lifestyles, hence creating a sense of belonging with the viewer, making them want to watch the programme. It will also have cliffhanger endings that will draw the audience’s attention, persuading them to follow the next episode.

Subject
Love and hate is the subject of our single drama production. It is based upon a British Pakistani girl called Maaria, who falls in love with a White British boy called Cameron, who then becomes pregnant, carrying his child. Problems arise, when the parents of both individuals find out and refuse the marriage proposal put in front by Cameron, as he is from a different background. But this drama shows how truelove finds a way to reunite the two lovers.

Conflict
In this single drama there are a few conflicts which take place that create the suspense within the drama. The conflict is caused when Maaria forgets to cover the love bite on her neck, which causes fumes of anger in the house. As the parents find out about the boy, they refuse the proposal, not knowing that their daughter is the mother of Cameron’s baby. Maaria and Cameron run away to a nearby hotel following this incident. Both pair of parents realise their mistake and bring their children home to wish them a happy future together.

The main themes of the story are listed below:

¨       Maaria a drop out, A* student, falls in love with a playboy called, Cameron.
¨       Maaria and Cameron share a night, where Maaria falls pregnant.
¨       Parents find out about their daughter and her boyfriend and refuse a wedding proposal sent by him.
¨       Maaria runs away with her boyfriend, during her pregnancy.
¨       Parents realise their mistake and bring their children back home to wish them a happy future, together, with their baby.

Drama & Suspense
This programme contains a lot of drama and suspense, which creates a beautiful entertainment piece, as it is always keeping the audience’s interest. Alongside this, there are also cliffhanger endings which persuades the audience to come back to watch the next episode of the drama. Interest is maintained throughout the entire drama, not just within a particular scene as drama is wide spread, evenly throughout it.

Overview
At the beginning of this drama we are introduced to both families and are given a quick insight into their background and lifestyles. Following from this, we see that Cameron is a new boy at Maaria’s secondary school and almost every girl has his eyes on him. He has the looks and the charms, however he does not have the attitude to keep a girl happy; he is simply a playboy.

During the middle of the drama, the audience is able to see the relationship between Maaria and Cameron build to a level of intensity, where they are physically in contact with each other. At this point, they both do not know the consequences of their actions; however problems arise just after this. Maaria is caught with a love bite on her neck, which makes her family suspicious and her brothers go on a manhunt, looking for her boyfriend. Few weeks into her pregnancy, she tells her friends and her friends advise to abort the child, but she decides to ignore them.

Towards the end of the drama, Maaria is gifted with a beautiful baby girl and the news is widespread in the societies. Her parents find out about the baby and realise their mistake and are ready to accept that their daughter’s happiness is above all other priorities; hence they go out to find their daughter and soon-to-be son in law, along with their granddaughter. The parents find their children and call for an official British Pakistani wedding, in which they gift the couple, a beautiful new family home. Misunderstandings between the families are resolved and Maaria’s family invites Cameron and his family to dinner, on their Eid celebration.

Information to be taken away from this single drama are:

¨       That you should love everyone despite their colour, race, background and beliefs,
¨       Love over wins hate and true love can change people’s emotion, feelings and attitudes towards things and
¨       To be able to love and fight for it.

This is the main structure for the overall single drama, however I know that the single drama is to be 5 minutes long only, hence we will not be able to show all the scenes and story lines as mentioned above in this overview.

Treatment:

It’s 2012. Sidney Stringer is a modern, thriving school environment. It is a hectic morning and the start to a new school year. Families all over Britain are getting the kids ready for the first day back at school.

CAMERON languishes on an Italian leather sofa, watching MTV.  CHRISTINA rushes in and gently shoos Cameron off the sofa, whilst telling him he’s going to be late for his first day back at school. Cameron is unconcerned and casually tells his mother to chillax.

MAARIA is washing up the dishes in a spacious modern kitchen, while her mum NAZIA is preparing breakfast for her only daughter and her husband. MANSOOR is sitting patiently reading his newspaper while Nazia is preparing breakfast.  Maaria joins her parents for breakfast, while her brothers are sleeping, before she sets off for school.

School bell rings, students move steadily, to their first lessons after the half term break whereas Christina and Cameron attend a meeting with MR HENDERSON; the school’s head teacher. Following the short meeting Christina leaves and Cameron is shown around the building, shortly before the next school bell.

Maaria, ALIYA AND SAMINA all wait outside SARAH’s classroom, waiting for her to finish lesson when Mr Henderson and Cameron approach the girls for a warm introduction. The girls are very shy especially Maaria, who is the school’s outstanding A* student.

Hours fly by and the day comes to an end. Many girls fall for Cameron’s daring charms but only one lucky girl actually catches Cameron’s attention. On one hand Maaria’s friends are persuading her to go out with Cameron, but at the same time, Cameron’s friends; JAKE and CONNOR irritate Cameron by saying not to ruin Maaria’s life. However, Maaria is convinced that nothing could possibly go wrong.

Days continue, Maaria and Cameron begin to feel comfortable within each other’s presence and build a personal attachment. It becomes difficult for them to depart despite knowing the circumstances they are both in; they are helpless.

Maaria is the youngest child of a traditional British born, rich Pakistani family, whereas Cameron is a White British millionaire’s only son. Their friendship turns to a riverbank of loving moments but things in their life take a twist when unintentionally Maaria falls pregnant after sharing a night with Cameron. They both try desperately hard to make her pregnancy unrecognisable but soon the truth comes out.

ADIL, HUMZA, ALI, Mr and Mrs Mansoor and Maaria are sitting having a family meeting when Ali notices a love bite on his sisters neck, which makes him very suspicious and goes to wipe out his sister’s boyfriend, with the help of his other two brothers.

The Mansoor family is put to embarrassment when Cameron and Maaria settle in a hotel together during her pregnancy. Awkward enough as things are, Maaria gives birth to a baby girl while her and Cameron’s parents on the lookout for their children. This news is passed through from her friends when Maaria’s parents ask Aliya, Samina and Sarah about Maaria.

Sooner or later, both families realise their mistakes and understand that their children’s happiness is more important than the dishonour of the families. The MANSOOR and PARKER families search is over, when they find their children and bring them back home. It is decided that the marriage is acceptable as long as Maaria has a Pakistani wedding followed by and English registry. Both families make an agreement in which Maaria and Cameron’s family gift them a house for them and their daughter, as a wedding gift.

When things have settled, Mr and Mrs Mansoor invite Cameron and his family over for Eid. Every little misunderstanding is resolved.

Below are pictures and videos of the process during the filming/shooting period:

Overview of Pre-Production

Each week our group got together for 5 hours and worked on this single camera production. For the pre-production of this single drama, me being the team leader assigned all our group members certain tasks to complete. When we had completed our individual tasks we emailed each other the task so that we all had a copy of it. This made the process of the pre-production easier for us and hence we were able to start filming as early as we could. From the above tasks, I completed the risk assessment, budget plan, treatment, mood board and two of the six actor profiles. As a group we sat down together and bullet pointed the main points which needed to go into our overview and wrote up them up in our own words. The main idea and the script had also been constructed in a group, where we sat down to decide the dialogues, location and additional music for our production. I also drew up the storyboard but gave each individual member of the group a copy of the storyboard so that they could make their own annotations. The shot list and the remaining three of the six profiles were produced by Gulshan and Palvi while I was working on another task.
